ABOUT
The Ohio Supported Employment Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SE CCOE) is a technical-assistance organization that promotes knowledge development and the implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs) for the treatment and recovery of people with mental illness.
Evidence-Based
EBPs are service models that research has demonstrated to generate improved consumer outcomes, program outcomes, and service systems outcomes. Research shows that organizations which maintain fidelity to the original design of SE achieve and sustain the best outcomes.
SERVICES
The SE CCOE helps service systems, organizations, and providers implement and sustain the SE model, maintain fidelity to the model, and develop collaborations within local communities that enhance the quality of life for consumers and their families. The SE CCOE provides these services:

Training & Consulting
The SE CCOE’s consultants and trainers are experienced administrators, service providers, and researchers who offer personal attention and customized training and consulting throughout the implementation process. We understand that every service system and organization exists within a unique cultural, political, and economic context. Therefore, we work closely with you to adapt SE to the unique culture of your community and, at the same time, to maintain fidelity to the model.
CUSTOMERS
The SE CCOE is providing technical assistance for SE to service organizations throughout the State of Ohio which are located in a variety of communities (e.g. urban, suburban, and rural districts). Many organizations are in different stages of the implementation process. Below is a list of additional characteristics of our customers:

PUBLIC-ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIP
The Ohio SE CCOE is a program of the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at Case Western Reserve University, which is a partnership between the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case and the Department of Psychiatry at the Case School of Medicine. The partnership is in collaboration with and supported by the Ohio Department of Mental Health. The Ohio SE CCOE works cooperatively with the Ohio SAMI CCOE, which is also a program of the Center for EBPs at Case. The Ohio SE CCOE shares some website resources with the Ohio SAMI CCOE (e.g., training calendar and online registration, library database, program locator database).

OUR HISTORY
The Ohio SE CCOE has its roots in an initiative that began in October 2003 when the Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) received a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and asked the Ohio SAMI CCOE to help four community-based organizations in Ohio implement the evidence-based SE model.
The Ohio SE CCOE was created in July 2005 to respond
to a growing demand in the state for technical-assistance
services that support SE implementation. The CCOE implemented
a grant that ODMH received in 2005 from the Johnson &
Johnson-Dartmouth Community Mental Health Program to help
additional service organizations implement the SE model.
The SE CCOE is currently working with 13 community-based
organizations in Ohio (see "Customers" section
above).
SE OVERVIEW
SE is an evidence-based practice that helps people with severe symptoms of mental illness identify, acquire, and maintain competitive employment in their communities. SE is assertive about helping people find the work they want as soon as they express the desire to work. The model facilitates systems change, organizational change, and clinical change. There are seven core principles that make the evidence-based SE model different from other vocational programs:

ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS
A brief description of mental health services is posted on the web site of the Ohio SAMI CCOE, which is another program of the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at Case. The description is written primarily for people who are new to the field of mental health services. Therefore, it provides a general overview in language that is easily understood by multiple audiences. Although the description is written as an introduction to co-occurring mental and substance use disorders (dual disorders), much of the information can be used to understand mental health services for people who do not have co-occurring disorders. We hope you find it helpful.
